Gary is seconded 3 days a week to the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (LFHE) as the Assistant Director, Membership (Wales). In this role, Gary liaises with senior management in Wales’ higher education on Governance, Leadership and Management, and also works closely with Welsh Government, HEFCW and Universities Wales.
Gary’s Aberystwyth University role as Director of Research, Business & Innovation at Aberystwyth University has responsibility for research development, business development, REF and Research Monitoring. Gary was the REF2014 manager for the university and he was named as a member of the REF Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel in May 2017.
Gary joined Aberystwyth in 2007 heading the HEFCW £10.9M Aberystwyth and Bangor universities’ Research & Enterprise Partnership, which achieved 550% of its targeted £10M in additional research income. In 2010 he established Aberystwyth’s Research Office and in 2013 he led the merger of this with the enterprise office to form the department of Research, Business & Innovation.
Previously, Gary was a management academic at Loughborough University for 10 years, where he was director of research for the centre of automotive management. Other experience includes: qualified secondary school teacher, FE College lecturer, and telecommunications systems sales. Gary was also Chair of the charitable status Leicester LGBT Centre from January 2005 to May 2007.
