Biography

I’m a social scientist who works on the politics and governance of science and research. My current role is divided 50-50 between research on research, and acting as a facilitator and champion of impact and interdisciplinarity. Outside of my own university, for the past four years, I’ve chaired the UK’s Campaign for Social Science https://campaignforsocialscience.org.uk/, I’m vice-chair of the International Network for Government Science Advice http://www.ingsa.org/, and I led a UK review of the role of metrics in research management, which published in 2015 as The Metric Tide https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/the-metric-tide/book251812. Since 2013, I’ve co-edited the Guardian’s ‘Political Science’ blog on science and research policy https://www.theguardian.com/science/political-science
