Biography

Dr. Stefan de Jong was that annoying student who would always raise his hand and ask ‘that is all very interesting, what can we use it for?’ Now he is supporting fellow academics in finding a meaningful answer to that question. His research is a crucial underpinning for the support he provides. Stefan wrote a doctoral dissertation about Dutch impact policies and practices. After that he joined Luris, the knowledge exchange office of Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Centre, as an impact adviser for the Social Sciences and Humanities. Between 2017 and 2019, Stefan took a two year break from that role to conduct post-doctoral research on university impact strategies at The University of Manchester. His research resulted in a model to map and characterize such strategies. Furthermore, Stefan is science communication manager of COST-ENRESSH, a European network of close to 150 members. ENRESSH studies evaluation and impact of the social sciences and humanities. Within the network, Stefan conducted a study on the variety of impact practices in countries across Europe. Finally, he regularly hosts impact workshops for academics, commissioned by universities and graduate schools and charities such as the Dutch Heart Foundation and Alzheimer Foundation and workshops for impact support staff as part of the ASTP-Proton course ‘Knowledge Exchange in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.’
