Director / EVP for Publishing and Strategic Relationships, Emerald Publishing

Biography

I am Director/EVP for Publishing and Strategic Relationships with Emerald, working in partnership with the research community in over 180 countries. I lead Emerald’s publishing group, serving authors across research, teaching, library and corporate settings, with a portfolio of 320 journals, 3,000 books, and 1,500 teaching case studies. My strategic partnership brief supports Emerald’s diversification of offers for the research community, including services related to open research (F1000), open innovation and networking.

Since joining Emerald’s Board in 2012, I have helped shape the company’s vision and strategy, deepening collaborations with academic and corporate organisations including the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative, American Library Association, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, European Foundation for Management Development, and African Association of Business Schools. During this time, Emerald achieved its best ever market position for quality and published content.

Our focus is on nurturing fresh thinking in applied fields where we can make a real difference to customers. We believe that the voice of the social science communities is under-represented in the scholarly impact and open science debates, and Emerald is addressing this by commissioning research and outreach in the areas of impact literacy and knowledge transfer brokerage.

My recent speaking engagements include “publishing your research in an evolving landscape” (Australia and New Zealand Emerald roadshow), “addressing the research-to-practice gap” (AACSB annual conference, Boston, MA), and “open science in the social sciences” (CONRICyT Entre Pares annual conference, Mexico).

Prior to joining Emerald, I spent 16 years with Elsevier, in publishing, marketing, product and content management roles. I hold an MSc in Quaternary Research from Royal Holloway University of London, and a BSc in Earth Sciences, from Kingston University.

I am from London, and live in ’God’s Country’ (Yorkshire!) with wife, two children, and an excitable Field Spaniel.
