Esther De Smet
Senior Research Policy Advisor
Policy Development Team, Research Services, Ghent University
Speaker Bio:
With a Master in Classical Studies with a minor in English Literature and Master in Media and Communication Studies, I knew I wasn’t exactly recruitment candy. So when in 2003 an opportunity arose to start as a policy advisor at my alma mater, I jumped at the chance. And I haven’t looked back. After digressions into educational policy and knowledge management I joined the Research Department in late 2010 where I have been working as a senior policy advisor ever since. My work focusses around three closely linked areas: societal impact of research (developing the institutional strategy, fostering impact literacy, and coordinating several initiatives such as the network of impact officers and the societal value creation fund), information management (research management system GISMO), and research communication. Curious by nature and driven by impact, I’m someone who thrives at the intersection of ideas and execution. I enjoy turning challenges into opportunities and bringing a thoughtful, human approach to everything I do. Whether collaborating with a team or tackling projects independently, I’m known for my reliability, positive energy, and willingness to share and collaborate (which clearly means I like talking, a lot). I am a member of numerous (inter)national impact-related networks and advisory committees, and a prolific speaker and trainer. I am deeply committed to creating a stimulating and nurturing research culture at my university and making sure its research has a real world impact.
