Biography

Kat Smith is a Professor of Public Health Policy at Strathclyde University and an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh, where she is an active member of SKAPE (the Centre for Science, Knowledge and Policy at Edinburgh). Kat’s primary research interests centre on analysing who shapes the policies that impact on public health and how. This is informed by a longstanding interest in academic efforts to influence policy and policy efforts to influence and use academic research. She was trained in Geography but has subsequently worked largely in Public Health and Social Policy academic settings. Kat is currently leading a policy focused workstream in a five year multidisciplinary consortium called SIPHER (https://sipher.ac.uk/), where she is working to both analyse and support policy efforts to combat health and economic inequalities. She is the lead author of a new book on research impact, The Impact Agenda: Controversies, Consequences & Challenges (https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/the-impact-agenda) and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the interdisciplinary journal, Evidence & Policy (https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/journals/evidence-and-policy), which recently launched a new blog (https://evidenceandpolicyblog.co.uk). Kat also co-edits the book series Palgrave Studies in Science, Knowledge & Policy (https://www.palgrave.com/gp/series/14592), which grew out of her 2013 monograph, Beyond Evidence-Based Policy in Public Health: The Interplay of Ideas (https://www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9781137026576)
